There are many books on how to cut hair. For example:
"HOW TO DO YOUR OWN HAIR LIKE A PRO" by Vincent and Fred Nardi, published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1977.
"HOW TO CUT YOUR OWN OR ANYBODY ELSE'S HAIR" by Bob Bent, published by Simon &Shuster Inc., New York, 1983.
These books teach about styling while using the old method: hands and scissors. Robocut is like a pair of ever-snapping-scissors that know exactly how long to cut the hair. You can use Robocut with this guide or with any book as the ones mentioned above. Here are some pointers to consider:
1. To decide what kind of haircut you want, think of the times you liked your hair best. Was it a short or a long cut? Is your hair unusual in spots (for example colic on top or reverse growth on the neck and you need more length in that spot for control)? Is your hair curly and lays best at a certain length?
2. You may want to simply repeat the haircut that your stylist has designed for you. Just measure the hair length in places on your head indicated below as zones for the various styles.
3. If you have very thick hair, it is best to engage smaller strands by moving the Robocut slower and in tighter pattern.
4. The first time try just a trim; for example trim 1/2 inch off. This way you learn without risk.
5. If after the haircut your hair does not look as short as you like, do not hurry to cut more. It is best to wear it for a day. Your haircut will look different after shampoo. If curly, it will shrink. You can always cut more later.
6. Shampoo your hair after the haircut. This allows the hair to take it's new shape. Only after that can you decide whether you like your new haircut.
